Adaptive Reuse Results in Enhanced Lab and Research Environments for Yale

Yale University, 17 Hillhouse Ave, New Haven, CT

Two Yale University schools, the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and the Yale Quantum Institute, sought an adaptive reuse of a 1960s modern-era concrete building once used as the University’s employee health clinic. The redesign of the fourth and fifth floors of a five-story building sought to provide both wet bench lab space previously located in other areas of campus for SEAS and to provide a new “front door” for the Yale Quantum Institute.

The new wet-bench environment for SEAS is a robust and flexible lab space. Three large and open research labs each have direct access to a shared equipment corridor, support laboratories, and central support facilities — providing SEAS researchers with an unprecedented level of convenience to access powerful research tools. Labs are each equipped with flexible casework, fume hoods and large sliding glass doors that provide maximum daylight and  views to the outside, as well as direct connections between lab and write-up space.

The Yale Quantum Institute’s dedicated “front door” facility includes private offices, open office space and a variety of meeting spaces. A multi-use conferencing area features convertible meeting space that can accommodate a group of 60 or allow for smaller breakout groups. Natural light and open views in all spaces make the environment welcoming to all Quantum Institute students, researchers, and faculty.
