Russell Hall, built in 1967, which was previously a high-rise men’s dormitory at the University of Georgia, welcomed incoming freshmen residents in Fall 2018 following an extensive 15-month renovation. The 230,312-sf midcentury classic embraced enhancements to advance both experiential learning and academic success outcomes for its 962 residents. Project goals included:

• Modernization of student rooms to provide new finishes, climate control and furnishings allowing flexible living environs to support individual needs and preferences
• Enhanced privacy with phone rooms and compartmentalized community restrooms to support all genders
• Replacement of all building systems to assure healthy living and learning environments
• Providing new windows, roof, and other envelope repairs to improve and reduce energy use
• ADA accessibility upgrades to create universal access to all public spaces and bedrooms for a more inclusive and diverse community

In addition to providing private bathroom amenities and new FFE in students’ rooms, the team also revitalized and added new community spaces including floor kitchens, study spaces and living rooms. A complete update of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, as well as window, elevator and roof replacement, were also completed. Finally, the first floor features high-tech classrooms and a quiet study place within the new Russell Academic Center.
