The Robert and Beverly Lewis Outpatient Pavilion is a one-stop-shop for outpatient care, designed to consolidate outpatient services previously scattered across campus. The new facility accommodates an increased need for outpatient services while freeing up space for much-needed enhancements to the hospital’s inpatient and emergency services. As these upgrades were time-sensitive, we harnessed a design-build approach to deliver the outpatient pavilion, where gkkworks | CannonDesign provided full design services and oversaw the construction process. The building was delivered to the client within 19 months of starting construction activities, six months of which were dedicated to the completion of two phases of parking.

Because of our distinctive single-entity status, our construction and design teams worked collaboratively with the owner from start to finish of the project — becoming an extension of the hospital’s staff. This collaborative design approach, coupled with a guaranteed maximum price contracting arrangement, allowed us to consistently evaluate scope, cost and priorities throughout the project. Reflecting on this teaming method, James Lents, former Director of Project Management for Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center, noted:

The design objective for the pavilion was to create a therapeutic and healing environment that visually connected to the greater campus context. Within the structure, rehabilitation and physical therapy services are housed on the first floor while outpatient surgical services occupy the second floor. The new building also includes five outpatient operating rooms and 23 pre-op/recovery bays. This ratio allows the hospital to re-direct high-volume cases to the outpatient facility thereby increasing inpatient capacity by 40 percent.

In 2015, the Robert and Beverly Lewis Outpatient Pavilion received the Regional Award and the Design Excellence Award from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Western Pacific Region.
