Re-imagining the education experience for an independent day school
North Shore Country Day School (NSCDS) is a pre K-12 community rooted in tradition that challenges each member to develop a passion for active, life-long learning and respect for others. We partnered with the school to create a prepared a campus master plan, which included 12 lower, middle and upper school buildings on a 16-acre site.
To kick off the process, we held a summit at NSCDS that brought together design and education experts, which was a critical component of the master planning process. The summit was an opportunity to place the discussion of the future of the NSCDS facilities in a broader context. One year after completing the master plan, we began work on conceptual planning for a renovation of the Upper School. The old Upper School was trapped in an outdated environment filled with rigid furniture in straight rows and confined spaces. The new Upper School is comprised of agile classrooms fit with moveable furniture and transparent, connected, flexible spaces creating a learning environment conducive for dynamic ways of learning and teaching.
Faculty, staff and students participated in the process. The end result are classrooms of the future that better leverage the educational dynamic that currently distinguishes North Shore—highly interactive environments that facilitate personal connections, thoughtful analysis, discussion and debate.
