Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Building 201 is an interdisciplinary research facility that is designed to provide flexible laboratory and office space in a highly collaborative, open workplace environment. APL is a not-for-profit university-affiliated research center, where more than 6,000 of the nation’s top scientists, engineers and technical specialists conduct programs to ensure national security, advance the frontiers of science and engineering, and educate and inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.

A three-story entrance plaza with a dramatic cantilever, supported by a field of columns, serves as a gateway for the future campus extension and existing community. The plaza leads to a four-story atrium, where labs and workspace are intertwined to promote collaboration. Laboratories are organized in a shared facility plan around a four-story daylit atrium that allows for greater social integration in conjunction with generous, unassigned collaborative spaces offering researchers many options for focused, informal and group work activities.
