Transformative Adaption Yields High Returns

Clorox, Pleasanton, CA

We started working with Clorox’s California-based research and development group in 2011 to better understand work patterns across its R&D facilities and to develop a new interdisciplinary entrepreneurial culture that will enhance efficiency, increase productivity, and align working environments with brand experience.

Using data from occupancy studies and surveys, coupled with leadership and stakeholder interviews, we helped Clorox create a new interdepartmental organizational structure, a series of aligned work style profiles, and developed highly efficient workplace solutions to support them.

The first initiative — a pilot study — was executed in Kennesaw, Georgia. Shortly thereafter, and based on the lessons learned from the pilot study, we helped transform Clorox’s largest R&D campus in Pleasanton, CA, which led to significant real estate and operational efficiencies. Dubbed a “New Scientific Workplace,” the Pleasanton campus comprises more than 360,000 sf of renovations across four buildings research and development laboratories, administrative offices, café and conference center plus a new pilot plant and warehouse facility.

I’m mobile, I don’t have an office, I work out there on the floor as do all the other leaders. It breaks down hierarchies, and it allows so much faster communication and decision making because we’re all in it together. And it’s actually a really cool environment, very informal.

– Wayne Delker Senior Vice President + Chief Innovation Officer
