A fusion project bringing together recreation, sports and arts

Adelphi University, Centers for Sport and Performing Arts, Garden City, NY

Adelphi University’s Centers for Sport and Performing Arts is part of a major new facility for arts and recreation linking two of the campus’ existing structures—the 1929 Woodruff Hall designed by McKim, Mead and White, and the experimental 1974 Olmstead Theater designed by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates.

The overall complex is a “fusion” facility integrating the arts, athletics and recreation in the heart of the campus.

The Performing Arts Center houses the departments of dance, music and theater, and includes five performance venues: the 500-seat Concert Hall for chamber ensembles, the renovated 300-seat Olmstead Theater, the 200-seat Dance Theater comprised of two rehearsal studios, the 100-seat Black Box Theater and the 80-seat recital hall, an intimate wood-paneled venue that also acts as a recording studio. Education and support spaces include practice rooms, teaching studios, digital and electronic music laboratories, departmental offices and classrooms. Innovative sustainable practices including improvements to the campus infrastructure have given the $89 million project LEED certification.
