Cover Story: Three CannonDesign Projects Recognized in Athletics Business Architectural Showcase

We are thrilled to share three CannonDesign projects are included in Athletic Business’ 2020 Architectural Showcase published earlier this week. Even more exciting, our University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles Arena project is featured on the issue cover.

Each year, the Athletic Business showcase recognizes the best recently constructed athletic, recreation and fitness facilities from around the world. Here is more information on each of our three projects recognized:

A pivotal project for the University of Southern Indiana (USI), Screaming Eagles Arena is an iconic addition to the campus that dynamically enhances student-athlete and fan experiences, bolsters athletics and academics programming, and best equips USI to recruit premier athletes. Highly artistic, and purposefully communal in its design, the USI venue represents an exciting trend in the evolution of collegiate sports venues and spaces. The building is more than just a host for athletic competition, but an active ingredient in shaping USI campus culture.

The Connell Recreation Center is a truly unique facility both rooted in the tradition of Boston College’s collegiate gothic architecture and infused with leading-edge 21st century programming space and amenities. Standing four stories tall, the 244,000 sf center is a beacon for the campus that redefines the future of fitness, recreation and wellness for the campus. In line with Boston College’s principles around wellness, inclusivity and student-life, the building is designed to welcome all students through diverse programming, design choices and amenities.

The Laurier Brantford YMCA in Brantford, ON is a dynamic community resource and a new model for community and collegiate recreation. The first YMCA in the world co-owned with an academic institution, the building unites the regional YMCA and Wilfrid Laurier University. The design team engaged the two clients and the community in a highly collaborative process to ensure all ideas and possibilities were covered and needs best met.

From all the projects included in the showcase, Athletic Business will now select 10 for its annual Facility Merit Awards later this year.
