University of Washington’s CAMCET: Educating the Next Generation of Employees

CannonDesign partnered with the University of Washington (UW) to develop a predesign study for the new Center for Advanced Materials and Clean Energy Technologies (CAMCET), continuing to build upon UW’s leadership role in clean technology.

Our design team worked closely with UW project leaders, students, faculty and external partners in Seattle to design a space that acts as an ecosystem for generating multi-disciplinary solutions to the greatest environmental challenges facing our planet.

CAMCET is intended to be a catalyst for the UW Innovation District and a hub for learning, researching, prototyping and driving clean technology ideas to market. CannonDesign’s strategic leadership and design-prototyping process redefined the conventional DNA of the building to support innovation in science and engineering and meet marketplace demands for devices, technology, and the next-generation workforce. In Washington state, renewable energy, power grid management, pollution reduction and more employs more than 90,000 scientists, researchers, technicians and other workers, all backed by more than $200 million in venture capital.

The unique concept was a result of intense collaborative workshops with Seattle’s clean-tech community. It is a space where students, researchers and industry partners can interact and move seamlessly between labs, technical instrumentation spaces, testbed facilities, as well as meeting and social spaces. Public and learning spaces are designed to host large scale events like conferences, public events, interdisciplinary student competitions, and K-12 field trip visits, with clean-tech research on display. CAMCET will be a dynamic place inspiring the next generation of clean technology scientist entrepreneurs in a state leading the way on renewable energy and resources.
