UNC Charlotte Opens School's First Ever Dedicated Campus Recreation Center

We are thrilled to have helped UNC Charlotte create its first-ever campus facility dedicated solely to health and recreation.

The University Recreation Center (UREC) officially opened January 8 with key university leaders, faculty, staff, students, alumni, public officials, community partners, and members of our team on hand to celebrate. We partnered with Jenkins Peer Architects on the building that serves as a game-changer for the university and will help students lead healthier lives for generations. Athletic Business profiled the building’s grand opening in its Facility Friday roundup.

“Our campus now has significant space for individual exercise and group fitness,” said UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois at the grand opening event. “Maintaining personal health is essential for students to be successful in their academic work and for participating in student activities that build the organizational and leadership skills they need to be successful after completing their degrees.”

A dynamic hub for student health and recreation, the building offers a wide variety of recreation opportunities thanks to multi-purpose courts, indoor and outdoor pools, group fitness studios, a cycling studio, an elevated running/walking track, space for cardiovascular and weight training and more.

“Without a doubt, this new University Recreation Center will enhance the campus experience for UNC Charlotte students,” said Chandler Crean, student body president. “As a Niner Guide for the Admissions Office, I can’t wait to include this facility in my campus tours and see the look on prospective students’ faces when they see the top-notch campus resources available to them.”

Our Recreation + Sports Practice Director Colleen McKenna is a graduate of UNC Charlotte and a key leader for the new center. She shared that “Seeing this building open is a thrilling moment for me personally, the university and our practice. The response from students was overwhelming and it is clear why this new facility will be a game changer for the university and the student experience on campus.”
