Health Leaders Presenting Projects and Expertise at 2019 Healthcare Design Expo & Conference

CannonDesign health practice leadership and designers will be featured heavily at this year’s Healthcare Design Expo and Conference in New Orleans from Nov. 2-5. Our presentations are on topics from resilient design to a behavioral health facility case study to decentralized inpatient unit design. Read on for more details on each presentation.

  • Carlos Amato, principal, is speaking on “Incorporating Technology that Improves Patient Safety and Saves Lives” on Nov. 4. Carlos along with TLC Engineering will explain how to use technology to directly impact the patient experience and improve staff quality of life and preserve the “human touch” at the core of medicine.
  • Steve Kopp with two leaders from Texas Children’s Hospital will present a case study on the Lester and Sue Smith Legacy Tower one year after opening this 19-story tower for critical care and heart services. The presentation, on Nov. 4, will look at how critical care units that were doubled in size per bed improved patient care and family satisfaction.
  • Juliet Rogers, president of Blue Cottage of CannonDesign, is presenting with The New Parkland Hospital Research Coalition on “The Impact of a Decentralized Inpatient Unit Design on Nurse Learning Opportunities” on Nov. 3 and she is also presenting with Michigan Medicine faculty on “Physician Engagement and Perspectives in the Lean Facility Design Process” on Nov. 4.
  • Principals Brian McKenna and Jocelyn Stroupe along with Nantucket Cottage Hospital leadership will discuss how the island hospital was designed to face and withstand catastrophic weather conditions that could cut it off from access to the mainland. Their presentation, on Nov. 5, shows how the new hospital changed the patient and caregiver experience for generations to come.
  • The newly-opened University of Kansas Health System Strawberry Hill Behavioral Health facility brings mental health services to an underserved population.  The project utilized a vacant government office building to create a state-of-the-art healing environment. Stephanie Vito and Matthew Kron will present “Strawberry Hill Behavioral Health: Transformation from Corporate Office to Therapeutic Healing Environment” along with the University of Kansas team members on Nov. 5.
