Responding to a rapidly evolving student body

Monday, March 20; 2:15 p.m.

The University of Central Missouri has experienced consistent enrollment growth, an influx of international students and great enthusiasm from student groups. This new audience is changing space needs, use patterns and institutional identity. The session will explore ways to create an adaptable student union that reflects a changing student body, and address the core competencies of planning, management and intercultural proficiency. The group will share techniques for managing short- and long-term space demands; emerging balance between active, energetic spaces and quiet/collaborative/supportive zones; and strategies for building true campus diversity and identity.

Doug Campbell from CannonDesign will present with the University of Central Missouri’s Deb Hobson and Patrick Bradley.

A tale of two unions: UDC and UF.

Wednesday, March 22; 2:45 p.m.

The programming, planning and design processes at the University of the District of Columbia’s student center and the University of Florida’s Reitz student union ran in parallel from 2012 to 2015. With equally complex sites, this session will explore similarities and dramatic differences in the design process, outcomes and lessons learned. Discussion will also include how institutional planning and programmatic needs were met and utilized to enhance student involvement. Project complexities of new and renovated construction will be shared along with challenges of densely located structures, and creative ways for new space with highly sustainable and energy efficient construction.

CannonDesign’s Patricia Bou and Roland Lemke, along with Eddie Daniels of the J. Wayne Reitz Union at the University of Florida and Erik Thompson at the University of the District of Columbia will present this session.
